“… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. …”

Somali pirates prove problem for Dutch

The arrest of 16 Somali pirates by Dutch naval personnel could land Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal with a problem. The pirates had hijacked an Iranian fishing boat. Two of them were killed in an operation involving Dutch frigate HNLMS Tromp and the others were taken prisoner. The obvious thing would be to extradite them to Iran but that looks more or less impossible.

It could have been a perfect chance for Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal to improve Dutch-Iranian relations - which hit an all-time low in January with the execution in Tehran of the Dutch-Iranian woman Zahra Bahrami. However, it looks like the pirates are more likely to be the cause of yet more problems for Mr Rosenthal.

Under international law, any country can try pirates. In practice, however, it’s usual that detainees are brought to justice either in the victims’ country – in this case Iran – or in the country of those who arrested them.

Kenya and the Seychelles

Another possibility is that the pirates are prosecuted in a country in the region with which special agreements have been made. Kenya and the Seychelles have such agreements with the European Union and NATO, which are in charge of the operations to protect shipping in the region from Somali pirates.

Bibi van Ginkel from the Clingendael Institute thinks that, even if Mr Rosenthal wanted to extradite the pirates to Iran as a gesture of goodwill, this could prove very difficult. The government in The Hague would first have to make sure that the prisoners would be treated in accordance with the rules.

“What sort of treatment might the prisoners expect? What sort of cells would they be held in? Do they run the risk of being tortured, and could they end up facing the death penalty? The Netherlands is bound by the European Convention on Human Rights and The Hague is therefore committed to ensuring that such things couldn’t happen before handing over any suspects to another country.”

Extradition?

Dr Van Ginkel says Mr Rosenthal has to refuse to extradite the pirates if there are indications that Iran would treat them harshly. The minister will have to hope that Iran does not request their extradition, because a Dutch refusal might well constitute another blow to relations with Tehran.

Trials in Kenya or the Seychelles are just as unlikely as these countries say they can’t deal with any more pirates. A Dutch trial looks like being the only available option, although the Netherlands is probably also not too keen on taking on the task. Setting the pirates free, as has happened in the past, is no longer acceptable.

Piracy more ruthless

The questions remains whether Somali pirates, following the death of two of their number, will now start to target Dutch shipping. Jeroen Kuiper of Marine AON Risk Services doesn’t think this will happen. Retaliation by Somali pirates seems even less likely given the Dutch government's latest decision to deploy marines to protect Dutch merchant vessels.

Marco Wiesenhaan from the EVO shipping organisation believes Somali pirates are becoming more ruthless.

“Piracy is becoming increasingly criminal. It appears that international criminal organisations are becoming involved. In the past, it used to be more a way of getting by for ordinary Somalis.”

Private security firms?

Mr Wiesenhaan does not favour private security staff onboard merchant ships:

“That would mean there would be no control by parliament which of course oversees the operations of military personnel. You might provoke even more violence … The deployment of marines on the most vulnerable ships, that gets my vote.”
