“… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. …”

Peace Philosopher on dealing with the past

"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." This frequently quoted line from philosopher George Santayana has become conventional wisdom, but Peace Philosopher and author Bernhard Schlink questions whether this quote is, in fact, a true proposition.

Professor Bernhard Schlink is currently working as the Peace Philosopher at the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study (NIAS)*. He achieved global fame with his story The Reader, which has been translated into myriad languages and adapted into an Oscar-award winning film. Radio Netherlands Worldwide spoke with Professor Schlink in the context of the International Day of Peace.

Coping with crimes

The Reader is the story of a teenage German boy, Michael, who falls in love with a much older woman, Hanna. After a secret affair that lasted months, Hanna disappears one day leaving Michael heartbroken and confused. Later in life, while studying law, Michael discovers that Hanna was a Nazi security guard who was involved in an incident in which 300 Jews were killed. The story deals with the difficulties that members of Mr Schlink's generation had with coping with the crimes committed by previous generations. For Professor Schlink, justice is at the heart of this coping process:

"I think [the pursuit of justice] has always been important. Not just in today's, but also yesterday's world and it will be important in tomorrow's world. I think that the disastrous events, the crimes, the horrors of the last century have made our societies more aware of injustice and have created, maybe, an even a stronger hunger for justice... than at other times."

Essential step

Not surprisingly, Professor Schlink believes it is important to cope with the past, but he is sceptical about whether learning from the past is actually an essential step on the road to progress:

"So, one has to cope with the past to go on and be able to live a healthy life. I don't know to what extent it really has to happen in each and every country. We have countries that don't really deal with their past. Spain hardly deals with the past of the Franco years and the civil war. Russia hardly deals with Stalinism. Does this mean that these countries are unable to move forward to a healthy future? I simply don't know."

City of peace and justice

In his capacity as Peace Philosopher at NIAS, Professor Schlink attended a special presentation of the film version of The Reader this week in The Hague, known as the international city of peace and justice. Most of the world's most prominent international courts, including the International Criminal Court, the tribunal for the the former Yugoslavia, and the Hariri tribunal, are located in The Hague. Professor Schlink does support the efforts of international courts:

"International attempts at criminal justice are a transition to the point where each and every country will be able to do it by themselves. And at that point, I think, a country can decide, okay, we'll have an amnesty or we won't, we'll have a pardon of this or that individual perpetrator or we won't."

Professor Schlink believes that eventually all nations will have criminal justice systems robust enough to administer justice.
