… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. …

Willem Buiter appointed chief economist of Citigroup

Willem Buiter, the contrarian economist with Dutch roots, will become the chief economist of the American Citigroup, a company he has been very critical about.

NRC International, by Floris van Straaten in London, 1 December 2009 17:03

British-American economist Willem Buiter, a professor at the London School of Economics, over the past year wrote numerous blogs and articles about governments which were too easy on banks and bankers. Ironically, he has now accepted the job of chief economist at the American Citigroup banking group, one of the companies bailed out by the US government last year.

"American finance minister Hank Paulson has rescued the banks on conditions that were too lax," Buiter (60) told NRC Handelsblad at the time. On his Maverecon blog, hosted by the Financial Times, last April he referred to his new employer as "a conglomeration of worst-practice from across the financial spectrum."

Buiter's new job will be to make sure the banking group will not need state aid again. His great knowledge of macro economics and markets will no doubt prove useful. He has little experience, however, in working for a large private business, although he was an adviser to Goldman Sachs since 2005, a position he rescinded this November.

Buiter spent most of his career made a name for himself working at British, American and Dutch universities and government institutions such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where he was the chief economist between 2000 and 2005, and as an adviser to the Bank of England. He also occasionaly worked for the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Commission.

Buiter was born in The Hague in 1949 and grew up in the Netherlands. His father was a prominent member of the Dutch Labour party PvdA and the mayor of Groningen for a time. Willem Buiter went to study in British Cambridge and graduated with honours as an economist in 1971. He then moved to the United States where he obtained his Ph.D. under Nobel prize laureate James Tobin, studying the relationship between short and long-term equilibrium.

He returned to England as a professor at the London School of Economics in 1976 and has remained associated with that institute. He is also a professor of economics at the University of Amsterdam.

Buiter is married to Anne Sibert, a professor of economics who works at the University of London. The couple has worked together and published a collaborative report on the economy of Iceland last year. When Buiter is not absorbed in economic affairs he is fond of reading science fiction and poetry or plays tennis.

He has held a chair as professor of political economy at LSE since 2005. He is especially interested in the intersection of politics and economics and doesn't hesitate to take firm stands on the issue. He has been arguing the British government should adopt the euro because, according to him the economic benefits are evident. He also thinks the position of the City, London's financial hub, is better served within the eurozone. When recently asked why the Brits are unlikely to adopt the euro, Buiter said: "There is probably a lack of political will. To many Britons ‘Europe’ is still a dirty word."

In a goodbye posting on his blog, Buiter promised to continue to "write and publish fast and furiously and to speak out in public on the issues of the day." However, "as a consequence of this career move, Maverecon will be mothballed."
