Dutch power company shelves nuclear plans

Zeeland power company Delta has informed it shareholders that plans for a second nuclear power plant will be shelved for at least two to three years.

Delta currently operates the only operations nuclear power plant in the Netherlands at the town of Borssele.

Former Director Peter Boerma, a fierce advocate of nuclear power, resigned last month when the company decided to postpone its application for a government licence.

On Monday, Delta announced that it had become clear that plans for another nuclear power plant must be shelved due to overcapacity in the electricity market in combination with low energy prices.

Delta said it continued to believe in the benefits of nuclear power, such as a low long-term cost price and an enormous reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

A new nuclear plant would not be operational until 2020 at the earliest. Delta says it will continue to invest in new power generation capacity. “There are a number of options which would take less time to realise than nuclear power” a spokesperson said.

Delta’s decision to postpone its nuclear ambitions was reportedly also motivated by an unfavourable climate for investment and insecurity about policies on negotiable CO2 emission rights.
