… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. …

Blood, sweat and thirst on the Burma Railway

Felix Bakker experienced the war in the former Dutch East Indies at first hand. He fought against the Japanese, survived the ordeal of working on the Burma Railway and lived through the bombing of Thailand. It is 65 years ago this weekend that Japan’s capitulation brought an end to the war in the former Dutch East Indies.

Felix Bakker was born on 26 October 1925 in Batavia, now the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. In 1941 he joined the Netherlands Marine Corps as a 16-year old volunteer. The young recruit knew that it would not be long before the might of Japan descended on the Dutch colony.

Homeland

It is a time that Felix remembers well: "Japanese fishermen had been arrested with radio equipment and transmitters in our territorial waters. And we knew that the Japanese forces were continuing to advance. The Dutch East Indies was my homeland. It was a cause I wanted to fight for."

Felix underwent an intensive three-month course with the Marines. When the Allies were defeated on 28 February 1941 at the Battle of the Java Sea, Java - the last Dutch stronghold in the East - lay open to Japanese attack.

Only enemies ahead

Felix Bakker’s unit was deployed behind the lines of the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). From that strategic position, the 37 marines had the task of neutralising any Japanese units that succeeded in breaking through.

"We were still in our positions when a unit from the Dutch East Indies forces appeared, utterly demoralised and exhausted. The officer made it clear that there were only enemies ahead. The Dutch lines of defence were in tatters. We engaged in battle a number of times to slow down the Japanese advance, but their strength was overwhelming."

Shot dead

Felix’s unit retreated to the south coast of Java. After the Dutch East Indies forces had capitulated, the Dutch troops decided to hand themselves over to the Japanese. Felix ended up in a camp at Malang. It soon became clear that the Japanese would not tolerate resistance. Five Dutchmen were shot dead while attempting to escape.

Later on, Felix was shipped off to a camp in Singapore with a group of prisoners of war. But he didn’t stay there long. Rumours began to circulate that the Dutch would be taken to Burma or Thailand. "We had no idea what was going to happen to us. We had more pressing things to worry about. I was stuck in a packed train to Thailand. There was hardly anything to drink and the heat was unbearable."

Burma Railway

Once in Thailand, Felix was forced to work on the notorious Burma Railway. The Dutchman was forced to hack away at the rock face with a pick axe from the break of day until late at night. To drag heavy loads of sand and rocks in the burning sun. "It was then I really discovered the meaning of thirst. I had hallucinations of taps with water running out of them. Cool clear water that you could drink. That was all I wanted to do: drink, drink, drink!"

Felix’s lowest ebb came during what he dubbed the “speedo period”. "The railway absolutely had to be finished at the end of 1943. The Japanese kept screaming ‘speedo, speedo' at us. Mentally, that was a very tough period. That was also the time when thousands of Asian forced labourers were shipped in. There were more and more deaths from exhaustion, malnutrition, malaria and dysentery."

Lap of luxury

Once the “Railway of Death” had been completed at the end of 1943, the war was far from over. Felix Bakker was put to work building a hospital camp for prisoners of war. Barracks were constructed. The Dutchman was also put to work in the camp’s kitchen and maintenance team. "There was enough to eat. And planks we were allowed to lie on. Needless to say, that was the lap of luxury compared to what we’d been through."

The tough times returned when the Allied Forces began their bombing campaign over Thailand. Felix ended up in a camp near a bridge over the River Kwai, a strategic target for the Americans.

The Allied arrival not only gave hope but also spelled danger. "There were terrifying moments. Awful times. Bombs exploded and shrapnel flew all over the camp. But at least we had the comfort of knowing that the war couldn’t last much longer."

In his final months as a prisoner of war, Felix Bakker found himself in a camp near Prachuap Khiri Khan, on the coast of Thailand. One day he heard Thai students shouting that the Japanese had been defeated. Two days later, a British and a Dutch soldier came to the camp to announce that the war was over.

Freedom and food

"It was a wonderful moment of euphoria, something I have never experienced since. Food! Three times a day! Walking around as a free man! We were eventually housed in a dormitory, where we had planks to lie on. The planks we’d had at the hospital camp were rough and unsanded. These were smooth: beautiful, polished, shiny, dark-brown planks. Wonderful. Even now, 65 years later, I think back on that moment almost every day."
