Netherlands lobbying for 2018 World Cup

The Netherlands is to lobby hard to host, together with Belgium, the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022. Both countries organised the UEFA European Football Championship in 2000.

The Dutch government has said it will support the organizing committee, and this pledge of support will be an important factor for the FIFA governing body when it comes to weighing the Dutch and Belgian bid.

Observers expect the 2018 tournament will be held in Europe. The Netherlands and Belgium are facing competition from a joint bid by Spain and Portugal, and from England and Russia. Australia, Qatar, Japan, South Korea and the United States have also announced their candidacy and will probably also compete for the 2022 event. The locations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be announced on 2 December.
