Dutch NGO subject to fraud investigation

The Dutch NGO ChildRight is being investigated on suspicion of fraud, the Amsterdam police confirmed on Tuesday, following an article which appeared in the Dutch morning daily De Telegraaf. The paper claimed that the former president of ChildRight pocketed several million euros earmarked for projects in developing countries to finance a gambling addiction.

ChildRight is an organisation dedicated to combating the exploitation of children in developing countries. It was founded in 1994 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Jan Tinbergen and it builds schools and provides underprivileged children with food, clothes and housing. Both the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela are among the organisation’s influential supporters.

The Dutch Central Bureau for the Acquisition of Funds, an organisation that supervises the spending of NGO’s in the Netherlands, filed a report against ChildRight in 2008 after receiving an anonymous tip about the board’s alleged malpractice.

Promise broken

Mr Jacob Gelt Dekker, multi-millionaire and former member of the board of supervision of ChildRight, told de Telegraaf that he once felt compelled to finance half of three schools in Laos and Cambodja himself after discovering that the organisation only sent half of the money they had promised.

When the ChildRight board of directors refused to give Mr Gelt Dekker sufficient insight into the organisation’s financial affairs he resigned his position. “Knowing what I know now, I would have resigned much earlier,” he told the Dutch daily. According to Mr Gelt Dekker the former president has disappeared without a trace.

Surprised

ChildRight says on their website they are astonished by the Telegraaf’s claims. “We only receive a couple of hundred thousand euros a year,” the organisation argues, “so embezzling several million euros from our budget would be impossible.”

The organisation says it is also surprised it had to learn that they are subject to an investigation through the media, since neither the police nor the Central Bureau for the Acquisition of Funds have been in contact with them.
