The Dutch food safety authority NVWA failed to act on reports of abuse at several Dutch abattoirs, preferring instead to move the vet who reported the problems to a new job, the NRC said at the weekend.
MPs from the Christian Democratic party and the pro-animal PvdD have called on the government to explain why no action was taken at the abattoirs criticised by the vet, describing his claims as ‘shocking’, the paper said.
The vet at the centre of the allegations filmed some of the abuse and is now home on ‘gardening leave’. He declined to comment on the NRC’s report.
However, his films and reports include instances of goats being killed without being properly stunned and of sick pigs and chickens being cleared for human consumption. He also recorded how chicken fillets which fell on the abattoir floor were put back on the production line against hygiene rules.
Reaction
Jan Meijer, the head of the abattoir inspectorate told the NRC the vet’s allegations of abuse at two slaughterhouses had not been properly dealt with.
‘What happened is absolutely wrong,’ he told the paper after viewing the videos. Asked why the meat from diseased pigs had not been recalled, Meijer said: ‘by the time the investigation had concluded, it had been eaten.’
Asked why the supervising vets had made false claims about the health of the animals, Meijer said ‘we had a good talk to him’.
Meijer said improvements have been made in the supervision of slaughterhouses and that he is generally happy, although not about everying. Abattoirs for ‘red meat’ are doing better than poultry because the poultry sector is under more pressure, economically speaking, he said.

Answer: Dear one, indeed the answer has been given, but let us give it again so you all understand. Animals are here on earth for three (3) reasons.
(1) The balance of biological life. . . the circle of energy that is needed for you to exist in what you call "nature."
(2) To be harvested. Yes, it's true. Many exist for your sustenance, and this is appropriate. It is a harmony between Human and animal, and always has. Remember the buffalo that willingly came into the indigenous tribes to be sacrificed when called? These are stories that you should examine again. The inappropriateness of today's culture is how these precious creatures are treated. Did you know that if there was an honoring ceremony at their death, they would nourish you better? Did you know that there is ceremony that could benefit all of humanity in this way. Perhaps it's time you saw it.
(3) To be loved and to love. For many cultures, animals serve as surrogate children, loved and taken care of. It gives Humans a chance to show compassion when they need it, and to have unconditional love when they need it. This is extremely important to many, and provides balance and centering for many.
Do animals know all this? At a basic level, they do. Not in the way you "know," but in a cellular awareness they understand that they are here in service to planet earth. If you honor them in all three instances, then balance will be the result. Your feelings about their treatment is important. Temper your reactions with the spiritual logic of their appropriateness and their service to humanity. Honor them in all three cases.
