Dutchman Tom
Dumoulin has won the 100th Giro d’Italia in Milan – becoming the first Dutchman
ever to win the round Italy cycle race.
Dumoulin, 26, started the day in fourth
place but managed to beat leader Nairo Quintana in the final day’s time trial
by 31 seconds, completing the 29.3 km final stage in 33.23.
Dumoulin is the
first Dutch rider to win a Grand Tour since Joop Zoetemelk took the Tour de
France title in 1980 and the first Dutchman on the winner’s podium since 1990, when Erik Breukink was third in the
Tour.
‘This is incredible. It was such a nerve-wracking day but I had good legs
and I just went for it,’ Dumoulin said after the race.
