The Netherlands’ Dafne Schippers successfully defended
her 100m title at the European athletics championships in Amsterdam on Friday
evening.
The 24-year-old took the title in a time of 10.91 and is considered a
favourite for a 100m medal at the Olympic Games in Rio in August. She had also
been defending European 200m champion but decided not to compete in that
distance in Amsterdam.
Earlier in the day there was disappointment for Churandy
Martina when he was disqualified from the 200m after first winning the race.
Martina, who won the 100m title on Wednesday, was disqualified for crossing the
white line on the bend. ‘I’m not sure if I did because I have not seen a
rerun,’ Martina told broadcaster NOS. ‘But if it is true then it is an
unpleasant end to a good day, but rules are rules.’
In other events at the
European championships, Dutchman Lee Marvin Bonevacia took the bronze medal in
the men’s 400m. That race was won by Britain’s Martyn Rooney.
