The foreign ministry said on Tuesday evening that the recall of the Dutch ambassador to Syria was not being considered. This was said to be in line with European Union policy.
Mr Rosenthal describes the violence in Syria as “barbaric and reprehensible”. He wants pressure on Syria to be increased through measures including a toughening up of EU sanctions against the Syrian regime and the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution.
Demonstrations
Italy recalled its ambassador to Damascus earlier on Tuesday and called on other European countries to follow suit.
Demonstrations in Syria against the government of President Bashar al-Assad have been going on for five months. The army has crushed the protests. Reports estimate that 1,700 people have been killed in the uprising.
