Car sends Dutch Tour cyclist flying

RNW, 10 July 2011

Johnny Hoogerland
Dutch Vacancesoleil team member Johnny Hoogerland had to be taken to hospital after today’s ninth stage of the Tour de France.

He was among the leaders when the group was hit by a car from a French television channel. Hoogerland was able to continue the race but lost his place in the leading group. He sustained deep cuts having landed in a barbed wire fence.

Hoogerland still managed to win the polka-dot jersey for his performance in the eight hill climbs of today’s gruelling 208-kilometre stage, from Issoire to Saint-Flour.
