India refuses to extradite suspected bank robber

RNW, 30 June 2011

India is not prepared to extradite Sanjay D, who is suspected of having stolen 1.25 million euros from the vaults of the Dutch Central Bank. A spokesman for the Public Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that the Netherlands issued a request to India for his extradition in January 2010 but did not receive a positive response.

India and the Netherlands do have a mutual extradition treaty but, says the spokesman, "it contains a clause specifying that India is not obliged to extradite Indian nationals."

An international warrant has been issued for Sanjay D's arrest.

The Dutch Central bank announced this week that the theft took place in September 2008. The Amsterdam court has a hearing scheduled on 8 July for the former bank employee. If he does not appear, the Public Prosecutor's Office is hoping the court will convict him in absentia.
