The Netherlands has agreed to a NATO request to deploy the mine hunter HNLMS Haarlem to clear mines off the Libyan coast.
| HNLMS Haarlem |
The request came after a French frigate discovered mines near the Libyan port of Misrata on Friday. As a result, shipping has come to a halt. Two mines have already been cleared; a third floating mine observed earlier is still being looked for.
The Haarlem is to take part in the hunt for the third mine and any other sea mines that may not have been discovered yet.
HNLMS Haarlem and six F-16 jets have been involved in enforcing an arms embargo against Libya as well as a no-fly zone over Libyan territory. All shipping and air traffic near Libya is constantly being monitored.
