Morocco’s ambassador to the Netherlands has twice been summoned to the foreign ministry to explain why his embassy’s local staff are being badly paid. Social Affairs Minister Henk Kamp confirmed this to be the case in a letter to MPs on Tuesday.

The Addaman Association which represents local personnel working at diplomatic missions in the Netherlands informed the Labour Inspectorate about the situation last year. It was confirmed that a number of staff were not being paid the minimum wage and were not receiving proper holiday allowances.
The ambassador was summoned and told that staff pay and conditions should conform to Dutch labour law. Last month, Dutch unions went public, complaining that many staff at Moroccan missions were facing financial hardship.
Difficult
Minister Kamp says it’s difficult to insist on the regulations being adhered to as ambassadors enjoy immunity from prosecution and can only be contacted through diplomatic channels. He points out that a letter was sent at the end of 2007 to all embassies in the Netherlands, explaining details of the tax and social security aspects of employment.
