The Dutch Foreign Ministry is advising Dutch nationals not to make any unnecessary trips to Syria. The ministry is concerned about the continuing unrest in towns and cities throughout the country and reports of incidents in which people have been shot dead.
The travel advice is the second strongest type of warning the ministry issues.
Protesters have been demonstrating in Syria since 15 March. They are demanding the release of thousands of political prisoners and an end to the endemic corruption.
Emergency legislation making demonstrations illegal has been in place in Syria since 1963.
