Dutch soccer icon Wiel Coerver dies

THE HAGUE, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Dutch legendary soccer coach Wiel Coerver died at the age of 86 in his residence at Kerkrade on Friday morning.

Coerver had been working for, among others, Feyenoord, NEC Nijmegen, Sparta Rotterdam, Roda JC Kerkrade and Go Ahead Eagles and enjoyed worldwide fame for his specific training methods.

The so called 'Coerver method' is purely based on technique, passing skills and individual class. After his coaching career he travelled all over the world to promote his method, which is used by big clubs like Manchester United.

As a player Coerver won the Dutch championship with Rapid JC in 1956. He captured the UEFA Cup in 1974 as a Feyenoord coach.
