Netherlands to provide West Bank scanner

The Netherlands will provide a mobile container scanner to boost trade with the Palestinian Territories. The scanner will make it easier to check the contents of containers entering and leaving the West Bank.

The equipment, costing several million euros, will be located on the West Bank border with Jordan and will be manned by Israeli personnel.

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal says the aim is to encourage import and export, contributing to the growth of the Palestinian economy while addressing Israel’s security concerns.

Mr Rosenthal added that the project comes in response to a request by Israel and the Palestinian Authority. It was on the agenda during talks between Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte during a recent visit to the Netherlands by his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. The matter was also raised in talks with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

The Dutch Foreign Minister says the deployment of the scanner can boost trade by 30 million euros a year.
