The very low countries: Space Station captures the lights of Belgium and Holland from 250 miles up

Cameras aboard the International Space Station captured a spectacular view of Europe - seen through the robotic arms and solar panels of the orbiting space station itself.

City lights from Belgium and the Netherlands are in the centre of the photograph, with Britain concealed behind solar panels to the left.

The image was taken by the ISS station crew on January 22, 2012.

In the foreground, you can see the end effector of the Space Station Remote Manipulator System, a robotic arm used to move equipment and supplies around the station.

Don Pettit, one of the Space Station's current crew, writes, 'Looking through the cupola windows on Space Station, it’s only natural to reflect upon who we are and where we fit into the world below.'
