Dutch Labour party wants to limit queen's power

The royal family's budget will be the main subject on Wednesday's parliamentary agenda. The debate is expected to focus on the extent of the queen's political power.

The opposition Labour Party (PvdA) says it wants to limit the role of the monarch to contacts with private individuals and social organisations. The party does not want to remove the queen from her position as head of the Council of State, the highest administrative court in the Netherlands and the highest government advisory body. Labour also does not want to scrap the weekly Monday meetings between the queen and the prime minister, but argues these meetings should focus on the head of state rather than cabinet policy.

The PvdA has clearly moved closer to the Freedom Party, the Green Left, the liberal democrat party D66 and the Socialist Party, all of which favour a largely ceremonial role for the monarch. However, the ruling parties VVD (conservatives) and CDA (Christian Democrats) are opposed to reforming the role of the monarch.
