Chinese woman elected judge at ICJ in The Hague

The Security Council and the General assembly of the United Nations have elected Chinese Xue Hanqin (54) as a judge at the International Court of Justice.

Her appointment means that once again a women will be sitting on the ICJ. Since the departure of Rosalyn Higgins last year the world’s most senior court consisted only of male judges. When she left, Judge Higgins said the election of judges should be based on quality, and that a new judge did not necessarily have to be a woman.

In 1995, Rosalyn Higgins was the first woman to be appointed to the ICJ, and served as president of the court from 2006 to 2009. Ms Xue served as China’s ambassador to the Netherlands from 2003 tot 2008.
