Indonesian call for Dutch gateway to Europe

Veteran Indonesian journalist Rosihan Anwar says the Netherlands should become Indonesia's gateway to Europe and European culture. He was present at the ceremony 60 years ago when Indonesia formally gained independence from the Netherlands.

In an interview with Radio Netherlands Worldwide, he said some of the tensions between the two countries stem from the Dutch view that independence began with the formal handing over of power in 1949. Jakarta on the other hand views independence as beginning in 1945, when the country declared its sovereignty and began its war of independence.

Many Dutch-Indonesians want the Netherlands to recognise the earlier date. However, the head of RNW's Indonesian department, Sirtjo Koolhof, says it is not an issue for most Indonesians. He says Dutch recognition of the earlier date would actually profit the Netherlands rather than Indonesia.
